The Village of Ash
The village of Ash is only 3 miles from Sandwich, on the Roman road to Canterbury, Kent. Close by is the ancient Saxon cemetery of Guilton.
Some parts of the church of St. Nicholas, dates back to approx. 1200 and boasts a 15th century spire tower which can be seen for many miles. Today, the nearby town of Sandwich is about two miles from the sea. Sandwich has been and remains a principle Cinque port. Originally, Cinque Ports were a confederation of five harbours, Sandwich, Romney, Dover, Hythe, and Hastings. They supplied the Crown with ships and men for over 300 years. In return they received freedom from tolls and customs duties, freedom to trade and to hold their own judicial courts plus many other privilages.
Today, these towns are still known as the Cinque Ports, but the coastline has changed considerably over the centuries and only Dover retains its major port status. Sandwich still retains a tradition of collecting 'Ship Money' from its associate towns, the ceremony of which is held in the ancient Guildhall Courtroom every year.
