Sosua… Why you may choose Sosua?
If you are after buying villas in Sosua, it is likely that you are looking for an active beach town.  Sosua is centrally located on the North Coast, near  many other destinations which you can explore by yourself, or by excursion. There are many small hotels as well as large all-inclusive holiday resorts.
Sosua is often called the Acapulco of the Dominican Republic. Some may say this was where tourism began way back in the 70s.
Sosua retains its charm with high density of shops, bars and restaurants.  Overseas visitors who came originally for a beach holiday have now established their own ex-pat communities and businesses. There are large numbers of Europeans, Canadians and Americans who live here permanently.   The Sosua Beach is one kilometer long and continues to be the main attraction of the area.

Sosua began to thrive after the second world war,  and was soon discovered by the wealthy from closeby Puerto Plata, Santiago and San Francisco de Macoris.  Many of the original Jewish settlers have now moved on, although the Sosua Synagogue has a museum with photos and memorabilia of the initial Jewish settlers. You may  also attend services there.

Tourism was really launched in the 70s and 80s, with the laid back beach town catering for thousands of day trippers from the Playa Dorada resort and for those staying in the numerous small hotels that sprung up in Sosua.

In the mid 90s, tourism turned towards the now popular all-inclusive holidays and several large resorts were developed  in the area. Visitors  still come from closeby  San Juan, Playa Grande, Rio Playa Dorada and Puerto Plata for restaurants and shopping, but the night life entertainment has quietened down thesedays.

Getting there:
From the Gregorio Luperon International Airport at Puerto Plata, about a 10 minute drive from Sosua, you will see the Puerto Plata section of DR1 Travel for scheduled flight service into the Puerto Plata airport. should you fly to Las Americas International Airport you will be four hours away. There is a bus service from Santo Domingo into Sosua, from where you may take a minibus or taxi to your hotel.  Minibuses travel to Sosua all day from Puerto Plata, Playa Dorada and Cabarete.

Sosua is midway between Puerto Plata and Cabarete. To stop here is a must for those traveling the North Coast. In Sosua itself, you are close to all the attractions in Playa Dorada, Puerto Plata, Cabarete and Playa Grande.. If you drive west to the La Isabela museum, near Luperón, on the way visit Playa Dorada, Puerto Plata, Cofresí and La Isabela. You may wish to go swimming on Luperón beach before returning to Sosua. Those in good feeling up to it should try the trek up the Damajagua mountain and down the 27 cascades.  Also, drive east to Rio San Juan, Pueblito Principe and Playa Grande in María Trinidad Sánchez province, stoping at Cabarete Beach.

Travelling around
Much of the time you can get around Sosua on foot if you are staying in the areas of El Batey or Charamicos.. Motorcycle rentals are commonplace,  and there are several minibuses and taxis for journeys into Puerto Plata, Playa Dorada or Cabarete.

Main Attractions
A main attraction of Sosua is the beach, and the shops and restaurants. Snorkelling is a very popular pastime. Sosua Beach is a crescent shaped beach with fine white sand and sits within in a sheltered cove.  Numerous  water sports can be participated in on the beach, and it is an easy swim to the reefs.

Sosua is quite close enough to Puerto Plata so you can enjoy all its attractions. You can visit the Amber Museum, ride the cable car ride to the Botanical Gardens at the top Isabela de Torres Mountain. Why not have a tour of the rum factory with various free samples and where you can buy top quality rum.  You can spend time at the Columbus Water Park with its numerous slides and pools, or spend the afternoon at the Gokarting  which is open all night. These 2 parks are only a 15-minute drive from Sosua.

Excursions
Excursions of the North Coast include safari  jeep trips to the beautiful countryside, catamaran trips from   Sosua Beach, and horse riding trips into the outback.  Also trips into Cabarete and La Isabela Park of Luperón This was the 1st European settlement in the New World, which was built back in the 15th Century.

Accommodation
Sosua offers around 2,000 hotel rooms, small hotels, guest houses, apart hotels and all inclusive holiday resorts. Some have their own dedicated beaches. Some are located in the Charamicos or El Batey areas, whilst others are just minutes away by car to the East and West of the beach itself.

Nightlife
It used to be that Sosua woke up when Puerto Plata went to sleep, but do not anticipate much from Sosua nightlife thesedays.

Sports:  Snorkeling Fish near the coral reef make for great underwater photo shots. You will see parrot fish, grouper, porcupine and dozens of other fish.

Snorkelers can swim to 150 feet from the shore and find several coral reefs and fabulous opportunities to feed the fish and take underwater photos. There are invariably several dive boats within the vicinity, and everybody is aware of the presence of snorkelers. The water is extremely calm in the majority of areas, although there can be a couple of tricky currents, but it is crystal clear.

Scuba diving
The best scuba diving is to the West and East of Sosua.  Several diving shops offer excursions. Divers of all abilities can enjoy shipwrecks, shallow reefs, freshwater cave diving, deep water diving and occasional  visions  of humpback whales and other large sea creatures.  Summer air temperatures are in the mid 90s, whilst  winter temperatures can drop to the low 70s.
